Stage One: The Story Often Predates the Script
When anyone yells “action” on a short drama set, someone has already decided which story is worth the gamble. Often, following a few hits backward lands you at a book at the start of the pipeline. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, is adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is based on a novel by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet in the Office!, released in 2026 and carrying a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. With a number of https://shortreels.org/ app owners also operating reading businesses, source material stays close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Where no book exists, writers turn to reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. The script’s job is to boil down a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast
On screen, the format’s economics become visible in casting. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep listing the same names. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort, Rosa Singerman fronted both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia in 2025, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. A lead with a following on one app comes to the next title with a head start, which counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox runs a production team in Los Angeles. Producers also cast with a particular viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days
Going by TheWrap, a Western short drama is usually filmed in eight to ten days and costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series. A similar picture comes from Wikipedia’s overview of the format, which places a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Simple arithmetic shows that, shooting a 70-episode series in eight days means filming close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported slimmer numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Every finished episode therefore costs roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also stated about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Because dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds
The footage gets cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room, all framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is structured around a question the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that pulls you from one installment to the next. Stacked together, those slivers give a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return, evidence of how widely episode counts differ by title. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, allowing the same footage reach viewers who never open the app. Put another way, editors cut video dramas for several screens at once.
Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls
The final creative decision is commercial too. Under the standard model described by TheWrap, the first eight to ten episodes are free. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Episodes after that unlock with coins, with the standard cost of an episode given as about 60 coins on ReelShort’s blog. The same blog says one ad unlocks two premium episodes, so watching ads is another way to earn coins; another option is a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews. What your store shows may be different, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best left alone.
Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series
The most recent production stage eliminates the camera entirely. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics that sit alongside its live-action catalogue. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually unmasks the foster sister who repeatedly framed him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series shares the name, but it should not be confused with this one. DramaWave has gone the furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line
Traditional studios have taken notice; Fox Entertainment provides the plainest example. Fox became a shareholder in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, by taking an equity stake in October 2025. Fox also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app. Holywater brought in a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer commits to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

The logic of the business snaps into focus when the stages are placed side by side. Much of the rest revolves around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces anchor the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, although fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually are thinking of ReelShort titles. Using only publicly reported figures, the table below lays out typical time and cost at each stage. Instead of guessing, it says so where no reliable figure has been published.
